On Monday, March 6, the long-awaited relocation and installation of the Sijan Memorial Jet took place at 5500 S. Howell Avenue. Friends, family, volunteers and all the major media outlets in the city were present to witness the impressive lift of the F-4C Phantom onto a 20-foot pylon. F4 Relocation underway!

MILWAUKEE -- The warplane of Captain Lance Sijan, a Vietnam War veteran and Bay View Medal of Honor recipient, has been removed from its pedestal outside of what used to be the 440th Airlift Wing compound at Mitchell International Airport. The jet was removed from that location so that it can be placed in a more prominent spot on the western side of the airport; a place where it will be more visible to more people. The F-4C Phantom jet that has long been a landmark on College Avenue just east of Howell Avenue will find a new home next year at the Sijan Memorial Plaza, 5500 S. Howell. The jet is a replica of Air Force Captain Lance Sijan’s plane. For those interested to know know more about jets, you can head out to blogs such as how much does f 18 cost. Tom Wilson feels a special affinity for Lance Sijan. Both were military pilots shot down by their enemies. Both were captured and held captive as prisoners of war, though different wars on different continents. THE SIJAN AWARD: “An unbelievable award named after an unbelievable Airman.”

Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Mark A. Welsh III presented the 2014 and 2015 Lance P. Sijan Leadership Awards to eight Airmen in the Airman’s Hall on April 7 at the Pentagon. The Sijan award, first given in 1981, is named in honor of the first U.S. Air Force Academy graduate to receive the Medal of Honor. Read more HERE:
